A very respected acquaintance recently posted a ranting/raving blog that I disagreed with. The subject is irrelevant, a matter of social intercourse with no absolute right or wrong. My opinion, the right one, the minority opinion was opposed by the majority opinion, the not really wrong one, by 593 to 1. How Cocky! How Arrogant! These salesmen! But, thinking about it later was I thinking about them or me? I didn't and don't know!
There was no question! Were all cocky and arrogant. All really good sales people are. Is this a bad thing? Is this offensive? Were we all offensive or just some of us? I remembered that I had commented on this very subject just a few weeks ago, I stand by that comment.
Every good salesperson is "cocky"! They start a little earlier. They work a little latter. They drive a little faster. They take a few more classes. They arrogantly offer their opinions to help others. They play a little less, but a lot harder. They expect success and get it. They think they earned it! Indeed they have!
The "Cockiest" boxer of the 20 century was Cashes Clay. He even renamed himself after his Profit and brought honor to both of them. I don't like boxing, I don't like draft dodgers, but I don't know of anyone deserving more respect, than Mr Ali.
Being "cocky" is only offensive when it's a substitute for performance or viewed by the mediocre!
